Hovering over the Waters--Genesis 1:2

The other day I was speaking to the girls about baptism and what makes it such an important event in the life of a believer.  As I was thinking of baptism and stories about water, I felt God directing my thoughts to a scripture in the beginning of the Bible that I never linked to baptism before.  Bear with me, this may be a bit of a stretch, but I believe God likes to stretch our thoughts and reveal new things to us using his word.

Genesis 1:2The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

We are going way back to the beginning on this one.  The earth started out being without a form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep.  However, the Spirit of God was still present hovering over the waters.  As I was thinking about this passage, it was revealed to me that just like the Earth was without form ( purpose ) and void ( empty ), we are the same way until we come to the saving grace of Jesus Christ and God gives us a greater purpose.  We as believers show this through baptism.  Note here that the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.  As we are getting baptized, we go under the water and God still hovers over the waters for us.  Coming up from the water is a symbol of the old ( the void empty self ) passing away, and the new creation ( just like Earth was created ) being formed and transformed to live for Him.  What a beautiful representation of God's Sprit living within us.
